True Discipleship

In Mark 10:17-31, we encounter the story of the rich young man, seeking eternal life. He approaches Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit it. Jesus reminds him of the commandments, which the man claims to have followed. However, when Jesus asks him to sell all his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him, the man becomes disheartened and walks away, unable to part with his wealth. Jesus then tells His disciples how hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God, adding that with God, all things are possible.

This passage calls us to examine our attachments and priorities. The rich man followed the rules, but his heart clung to his wealth. Jesus wasn’t condemning the man for being wealthy; rather, He revealed how possessions can hold us back from fully trusting and depending on God. Jesus invites us to a deeper level of discipleship, where our security isn’t found in material things but in our relationship with Him.

Reflecting on this, we are reminded that true discipleship is about surrendering everything to follow Christ. This passage challenges us to ask: What are we holding onto that might be hindering our walk with God? Jesus calls us to live with open hands, trusting that His plans for us far surpass anything we could ever possess. With God, even the impossible—like letting go of what holds us back—becomes possible through faith.
