My Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
As we gather on this Last Sunday after the Epiphany, we turn our attention to the moving passage from Luke 9:28-36, which narrates the profound event of the Transfiguration of Jesus. This transformative moment invites us to reflect on the divine nature of Christ and the call to embrace His glory in our lives.
In this passage, we witness Jesus ascending a mountain with Peter, John, and James. As He prays, His appearance changes, and His clothes become dazzling white. The presence of Moses and Elijah, underscores the continuity of God’s revelation through history, reminding us that Jesus is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. The voice of God declaring, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!”, echoes throughout the ages, urging us to pay close attention to the teachings and example of Christ.
The mountain experience is a powerful metaphor for our spiritual lives. In our daily routines, it is easy to become entangled in the mundane concerns of this world. However, we are called to seek those “mountaintop” moments, those ‘God did it moments’ as described by Father John Pinder, last Sunday; where we encounter God more profoundly. These encounters can transform our understanding of ourselves and our calling, just as the Transfiguration revealed Jesus’ divine identity.
As we contemplate this miraculous event, let us consider the implications it has for our own discipleship. Following our experiences of divine grace, we are not meant to linger in isolation. Instead, we are called to descend the mountain and engage the world around us, sharing the light of Christ with others. This means embracing the mission of love, service, and compassion in our communities, reflecting the radiance of Christ in all we do.
Moreover, the Transfiguration reminds us that trials often follow our spiritual highs. Shortly after this event, Jesus sets His face toward Jerusalem, aware of the suffering that lies ahead. We, too, will face challenges in our journeys of faith. Yet, it is through
these challenges that our faith is refined and strengthened.
As we prepare for the season of Lent, let us carry the lessons of The Transfiguration with us. May we draw closer to Christ in prayer, open our hearts to His guidance, and allow His light to shine brightly in our lives. Together, let us commit to listening to Jesus, following His path, and radiating His love in our community.
Blessings to you all, as we journey through this sacred time together.
